What to look for at your next rental viewing

By Matt Sweeting

A tenant thoughtfully reviewing a rental home with an agent

A viewing is your chance to understand how a home will work for your everyday life. Bring a short checklist so the details don’t get lost in the first impression.

Start with your daily routine

Think about your commute, parking, storage and the rooms you will use most. Visit the surrounding area as well as the property. Ask about access, noise and any community rules that could affect your routine.

Look beyond the furnishings

With permission, check taps, switches and appliances. Ask how air conditioning is maintained, which appliances are included, and who handles repairs. Find out about internet options and any backup power or water arrangements; availability varies by property.

Leave with clear next steps

Confirm the proposed move-in date, what is included in the rent and how to report maintenance issues. Write down unanswered questions and ask for clarification before committing. Share your notes with me so we can compare the homes you have seen.
